Snapchat Breaks Silence on Memory Deletion
A year ago, Snap told everyone with more than 5 GB of Memories that they had 12 months. Then it went quiet. The answer has finally arrived. Not as an announcement. As a support article.
On September 29, 2025, Snap capped complimentary Memories storage at 5 GB and promised "12 months of temporary storage" before anything changed. For a year, that was the whole plan. No date. No details. No word on what "changed" would actually mean for the photos and videos people had been saving since high school.
Now there is a page in Snapchat's help center titled "How do I manage my Memories storage?". It is the first time Snap has said, in writing, what happens to your Memories if you do not pay.
What Snap actually said
We are quoting the page directly, because the wording matters.
"No. Snapchat will not automatically delete your Memories because you do not upgrade."
"Starting in January 2027, Memories that are more than one year old and are not part of your oldest 5GB of Memories will be archived and remain stored on Snapchat. You will continue to have access to Memories saved within the last year, as well as your oldest 5GB of Memories."
"Archived Memories will appear as thumbnails in the app, but you will need to upgrade your storage to open, edit, or share them. You will have the options of subscribing or downloading your Memories to access them outside the app."
"No Memories will be archived before January 2027, and we will provide advance notice in the app before anything changes for you."
The upgrade in question is a 100 GB Memories plan at $1.99 a month or $20 a year in the US, or a Snapchat+ subscription.
Not deleted. Locked.
Read the second quote again. Anything older than one year that is not inside your oldest 5 GB gets "archived." Then read the third one. Archived means you can see the thumbnail, but you cannot open it, edit it, or share it.
Your photos stay on Snap's servers. You can look at a tiny preview of a moment from your own life. And to actually see it, you pay. Forever, or until you download them.
That is not a storage plan. That is your memories held hostage, with a subscription as the ransom.
A concrete example. Say you have 20 GB of Memories going back to 2019. Your oldest 5 GB, roughly 2019 and early 2020, stays open. Everything you saved in the last twelve months stays open. The years in between, the spring break trip, the graduation, the first apartment, become thumbnails you cannot tap into unless you subscribe.
To be clear, "hostage" is our word, not Snap's. Snap's words are "you will need to upgrade your storage to open, edit, or share them." We think those mean the same thing.
The fine print that should worry you
"More than one year old" is a rolling window. Every day, another day of your Memories crosses the line. What is open today is locked next year, and there is no end date on that.
The only warning Snap commits to is a notice in the app. Not an email. A banner inside an app a lot of people barely open anymore. If you stopped using Snapchat daily, you may never see it.
Cancel and the lock comes back. From the same page: "If you cancel a paid storage plan but still have more than 5GB of Memories saved, you will see information in the app about your storage status and your options, including upgrading again." Snap does not spell out the re-lock, but the archive rule applies to anyone without a plan. Pay for three years, stop, and you are back to thumbnails.
"Will not automatically delete" is carefully worded. It says what Snap will not do now. It says nothing about what an archived Memory is worth to Snap in 2028, or what the next policy update looks like. A year ago the promise was "12 months of temporary storage." Now it is a paywall. The direction is not subtle.
What you should do before January 2027
Snap's own page lists the alternative to paying: "downloading your Memories to access them outside the app." That is the part we agree with completely.
- Request your data export from Snapchat. Our step-by-step guide walks through it. The export can take up to 24 hours to arrive, and Snap's servers may get slower as more people rush to do this closer to January.

The clock moved. The risk did not.
The date everyone penciled in was September 2026. Now it is January 2027. If you were waiting to see whether Snap would blink, you have your answer: they did not cancel the plan, they rewrote it so that your memories never leave their servers and never stop being a reason to pay.
You do not have to play. Download them once, and they are yours for good.
